-- The process of how my kids and I carve pumpkins. First things first, picking out the size of pumpkin. Pumpkins come in a variety of sizes, we pick the best size for the design that we are creating. Also we look at the stem of the pumpkin, making sure there is enough of the stem to use as a handle. You may also buy carving kits for kids if you so desire. A lot of these kits come with carving knives specifically designed with the kids in mind. The second thing you will need, is a place to carve and create the design of your pumpkin. We tend to use the kitchen table. A newspaper is also a must. Lay out the newspaper on the table and use it as a drop cloth. Next get your carving utensils and pick out your design. Once you have your design, carefully cut the top of the pumpkin off. Using a spoon will help you get the inside of the pumpkin cleaned out. Next place your design on the pumpkin and carefully trace your design onto the pumpkin. Using the carving tools, carefully cut out your design. The third and final step after you have cut out your design, is to illuminate the inside of the pumpkin. A small candle works well, but with kids they also have battery operated lights that mimic the glow of a candle. These can be readily found at your local retail store.
