Two of my students are English Learner. I have one student who speaks fluent Spanish and English. Because of this I will make sure I pre-teach new vocabulary and give my English learners the opportunity to learn content vocabulary before lessons. During lessons I check in with my English learners to make sure they are able to understand the lesson. I have learned that students in my class are able to read the textbook but many of them have a hard time comprehending what they read. I learned that their math skills are high enough that they should have no problem learning how to do the graphs required in government. Because my students have difficulty with content comprehension I use different techniques in my class such as reciprocal reading to help students learn content reading skills. I also scaffold information and teach content vocabulary in my lessons. Three of my students have limited attention span. I have seated my students with attention problems away from one another and will check in with them frequently to make sure they are staying on task. I try to brake down the lessons into small pieces of information, with frequent review sessions and have as many hands on activities and cooperative learning activities as possible. Nearly all of my students are behind on credits and are in danger of not graduating on time. There are no major health concerns but 35 percent of my students receive free or reduced lunch.
