Not many people have paid thousands of dollars for just one text message they received while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. A study from Virginia Tech Transportation Institute reveals that texting takes the drivers eyes of the road for just 4.6 seconds. Five seconds is long enough to have a really bad day. As we combat the driving styles of Americans we now have a new enemy the cell phone. Texting while driving is a dangerous and careless act, leading to tickets, accidents and in some cases even death. Eighteen states and the District of Columbia have recently passed laws banning texting while driving. The punishments vary from one state to another but all have the same objective, to combat this deadly and dangerous problem. In Utah the punishment ranges from 750.00 dollars in fines and up to 90 days in jail. Other states have embedded fines if drivers are caught texting, much the same as not wearing a seatbelt. There has been talking that texting while driving could even lead to suspended license. The number of text messages sent and received increased by nearly one and a half billion a month in just three years. According to this article, most were sent and received by those who were behind the wheel.
