Soren Sorensen was born January 9th, 1868 in Havrebjerg, Denmark. Soren was maried to Anna Louise Willumsen and they had four children. He was a biochemist, which is a person who studies chemical substances and vital processes occurring in living organisms. His biggest accomplishment was introduction of the pH scale, which is a scale for measuring acidity and basicity. Soren ran the prominent Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark. While being head of the laboratory, Soren studied the effect of ion concentrations on proteins and since the concentration of hydrogen ions was important, he released the pH scale as an easier way of expressing this study in 1909.
Sorenson’s most important contribution to chemistry was his introduction of the pH scale. He also contributed greatly to humanity with this new discovery which is used in everyday tasks in medicine, biology, chemistry, food science, environmental science, oceanography, civil engineering. I chose Soren because he created something that is used today frequently. Yes, I chose him because he is a very interesting man that lived a fascinating life. If Soren was not born I think it would have a small impact but not a significant one, another biochemist would’ve eventually found this. If I had an opportunity to talk to Sorensen I would ask him what made him think about this concept and what did he intend on using it for.
