Feminism in Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey Feminism has been defined as the advocacy of social equality for men and women, in opposition to patriarchy and sexism. It started in the 1840’s as women opposed slavery and it morphed to include women’s suffrage and has developed into the modern feminist movement. Feminism has a great impact on the gender role in our society, family life, and labor force. All these titles focus primarily on the relationship of gender. Gender is best described as the construction of what is culturally assumed as “femininity” as well as “masculinity”. Gender is a representation, which is not to say that it does not have concrete or real implications, both social and subjective, for the material life of individuals. This paper will analyze the female character roles as they relate to the oppression of women in Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. This story is of Catherine Morland’s quest for happiness through love and maturity as she ages. While feminism takes many forms and cannot be characterized in any seamless way, it nonetheless encompasses the struggles of women to secure their economic and political agency. Feminism as it relates to late 18th and early 19th century literature cause much confusion about the roles and identity of men and women.
