The movie “Shawshank Redemption” was created in 1994. It was directed by Frank Darabont and the lead actors were Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. At first when this movie was released, it was not popular at all. However now, it is rated as the best film in the IMDb rankings. Throughout the whole movie, I spotted two very interesting extracts. First is when Red (played by Morgan Freeman) receives a harmonica as a “gift” for staying in prison and wonders if he should play it or not. The other extract is when he is walking in the hayfield after he gets released.
In the first extract, they show Red sitting in his cell holding onto the harmonica he got from Andy. It is a close up of Red and you can hear the lights going out. The colour in the scene turns from dark to even darker. I think the theme of this scene is close to “freedom” or the process to achieve freedom. The harmonica symbolizes the outside world and Red is nervous to play it, which can also mean that Red is scared to step into the outside world. In this scene, Red is wearing a tank top instead of the prison uniform and I think that this is also to give the audience a hint about the relationship between freedom and Red. The camera zooms in into his face to show his facial expression in the darkness. Before playing one note of the harmonica, the camera catches Red looking around. I think this is because Red is making sure that there are no guards around. The music (which has been playing before this scene) gets loude...
