The setting of something includes the time and location in which it takes place. Generally speaking, the setting provides the main backdrop for the story or in this case the poem. There are not many times that people connect the setting and the feelings together within a story or poem. In Robert Frost’s poems, “Desert Places”, “Out, Out”, and “Home Burial” setting plays a vital role in understanding the feelings of the characters.
The first two stanzas of “Desert Places” are about loneliness and this is shown by comparing the way the author feels to what is around him. Noticing “snow falling and night falling fast oh fast” he is realizing that everything around him is quickly being hidden by the snow (line 1). Snow is being used here to represent death as it prevents nature from being exposed. Although there is snow falling all around him he notices that there are “a few weeds and stubble showing last” which is showing that there is still some kind of hope (4). Frost goes on to talk about how “all animals are smothered in their lairs” and have nothing to worry about because they are being protected (6). Besides feeling dead and emotionless, “[he is] too absent-spirited to count” (7). His own desert places are a distraction so much to the point that thinking about other things isn’t even possible anymore. Stanzas three and four of Frosts poem are about the internal setting, the man realizing that the outside world is nothing compared to the fear that he has inside of him. ...
