“You are just like your father! You’re stupid! You’ll never amount to nothing!” screamed Nicky’s mother.

“You are a waste of time, I should have flushed you down the toilet” she said continuing to scream at 10 year old Nicky

That same morning Nicky went to school and went into her Language Arts class and there her teacher Mrs. Isaac, who wanted everyone in her class to participate, called on Nicky who was an excellent speller

“Nicky can you spell “encyclopedia?”

Nicky just sat in her seat afraid to try to spell this word; she was afraid because she thought if she didn’t do it correctly everyone would laugh at her and call her names.

She could hear her mother now “you are a jackass, you are no good”

With the all class looking at her, Nicole remained mute.

This is just one of the examples of child abuse and its effects on the language of its victims. Child abuse has been affecting society for a long time. Children who have suffered abuse show different symptoms from withdrawal to over sexualized conversation. Child abuse whether it be verbal, physical emotional or sexual abuse have been known to damage a child physically, emotionally and sexually but many do not know the effects this kind of suffering does on a young person’s ability to speak or use language .
