Abolitionist Frederick Douglass and author Sandra Cisneros both have gone through hard, yet successful lives in their own ways using their knowledge with literacy. These two people wrote about their experiences with literacy to express the freedom it brought them and, indeed, brings others. Both Douglass and Cisneros strived to have better lives in their early years. When they started to be open with their knowledge of literacy, they started to write about their personal thoughts. These are few of many examples.
In Frederick’s early years, he was unaware and wanted to find out what was happening to him as a slave. Therefore, he did whatever it took to learn how to read and write. “This bread I used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins who in return, would give me that more valuable bread of knowledge.” This man would be willing to give up his own food, a source of life, just to have the ability to know how to read. That points out how important it was to him getting just a taste of literature. Giving up things that Frederick needed in order to get what he wanted, shows that he was a determined person. Douglass did whatever it took to get this so called privilege.
