This was the first time I saw this movie ever because as a kid, I was a "boy" and when were were "boys", it was uncool for us to watch the mermaid because it was determined as a movie for girls.

I was raised in a family of an Asian upbringing, with me being Chinese and Japanese. English is definitely my second language, so my expression level for English might not be as prevalent. Sometimes we might express a different meaning and other people interpret them differently. I went to go rent this DVD at blockbuster and immediately the clerk that was checking me out kinda of smiled and asked me if this movie was for myself. He then proceeded to comment by saying, isn't this a movie for little girls. So automatically that shows that the role gender plays in today's society still play a big role in what we do and it reflects on our actions and decisions. Me as a masculine big, Asian male will get commented on renting a Mermaid Disney movie. Would that have been different if a 5 year old handed that DVD to the store clerk with her mom beside her? I don't know.

With me being an Asian male though, I do find Tiya Myles's Mirror Mirror to be quite interesting. The observations that were pointed out, I did not originally think of. I never noticed that every character in the movie was white until AFTER I completed the movie and read Mirror Mirror on the wall.
