    For most people, all they know about the Edmund Fitzgerald is what they hear in the hit 1976 song by Gordon Lightfoot."...And all that remains is the faces and the names, of the wives and the sons and the daughters” the song explains. While that may be all that people know, it is certainly is not all that there is to be told. The Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck is one of the country's greatest mysteries that has never been cracked. Through examination of the history of the ship, the journey leading up to the shipwreck and answeringquestions like whether the ship was cursed from the start, we can come to a better understanding of the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
    The birth of this magnificent ship took place on February 1,1957 when a contract was signed between the Great Lakes Engineering Works and the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. It was stipulated in the contract that it be the largest ship to ever set sail on the Great Lakes. Standing at 730 feet long, the Edmund Fitzgerald still stands as one of the largest ship to ever sail.Over 900 people worked to create this amazing ship. It was named after the chairman of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insuranceboard, Mr. Edmund Fitzgerald. However, it was often called by different names, such as "the Mighty Fitz," "The Fitz," or "The Big Fitz."
