Early History
Botticelli was born in Florence, Italy during the 15th century. He was born in the city of Florence in a house in the Via Nueva, Borg' Ognissanti. Before he became an early Renaissance artist, Botticelli was initially trained to become a goldsmith. During his apprenticeship is where he first got his name, “Botticelli” which means Little Barrel. After showing interest in becoming an artist, Botticelli received training from Fra Fillipo Lippi. Because he was extremely absorbed in art, Botticelli never married and lived with his family. Upon his death in 1510 he was buried in the Ognissanti. About 50 paintings survive that are either wholly or partly from his own hand. The Uffizi Gallery's magnificent collection of his works includes many of his masterpieces. Influence of Ideas Botticelli was an artist in the Italian Renaissance period. Therefore his paintings reflected ideas from that time. Basically Renaissance art shows joy in human beauty and life’s pleasures. Renaissance art is more lifelike than in the art of the Middle Ages. During the Renaissance, there is a shift back to classical ideas. Art often represented humanistic ideas of the time period; it had perspective, depth, color, self portraits, and often nudity.
