Collective security is a term proposed by the League of Nations in Article 11 of its covenant stating that that “Any war or threat of war…affecting any members of the League or not, is hereby declared a matter of concern to the whole League” essentially linking all countries together in the outbreak of war. The failure of this notion of collective security played a major role in the demise of the League of Nations and in turn the outbreak of war in Europe as countries could act in their own self interests and disregard any sections put in place by the league. However other pivotal factors were also present at the time leading to the outbreak of the war with the two major influences being the failed British policy of appeasement failing to stop Germany’s quest for lebensraum and the radical policies of the dictators Hitler and Mussolini breaking international law inciting the war in Europe.

The failure of collective security essentially meant the failure of the League of Nations as the policies of the league were all essentially linked under this idea. The breakdown of collective security started with Japan’s invasion of Manchuria however the full dissolution of the article occurred in the failure of the league to deal effectively with Abyssinian crisis posed by the aggressive self interest of the Italian fascist regime.
