With reference to the above quotation, explain why historians interpret events so differently.
Bob Carr’s statement “History comprises many stories – they compete with one another” could be no truer than in the study of Jesus Christ. It almost beggars belief that one figure in history could have brought about so much controversy and debate regarding every aspect of their existence. Yet, as Jesus Christ is tied so closely to belief and religion then it would be safe to assume that a historian’s own personal religious beliefs would influence their interpretations of the evidence relating to Jesus Christ. It is due to the historian’s perspectives and biases that the events surrounding Jesus Christ’s life have been interpreted so differently.
Perspectives and biases played an important part in the journey Lee Strobel took in his investigation of the historicity of Jesus Christ. Strobel writes, “For much of my life I was a skeptic. In fact, I considered myself an atheist. To me there was too much evidence that God was merely a product of wishful thinking, of ancient mythology, of primitive superstition. How could there be a loving God if he consigned people to hell just for not believing in him? How could miracles contravene the basic laws of nature?
