Questioned Document Examiners usually work for law enforcement or have private offices from which they are contracted by different people or businesses. They have many duties, especially those working in law enforcement. There several areas of specialization in this field and many different requirements to do this type of job. Not all requirements are the same field, nor do they all involve education. Many times, requirements involve experience, knowledge, and skills.
The duties of a questioned document examiner, depending on specialization, can include many things. They examine documents in question to determine if they are the original or forgeries, they examine handwriting and hand printing to determine who wrote the document, try to determine where the document originated from, and when a document was created. Duties could also include determining what events may have happened to a document, deciding what information on a document has been hidden or erased, and presenting all evidence and their professional opinions in a courtroom. There are also several specializations to the field of forensic document examination.
