The Baroque Period
Baroque Art began in Italy between the 17th and 18th centuries. Classicism of the High Renaissance was replenished during this time and the artists explored the basic elements of human nature and the realms of sense and emotion were critical. The Baroque era was immense and vibrant, luminous and colorful, dramatic and intense, passionate and zealous, and overpowered by emotions. It was important for most of the Baroque artists to portray the psychological element of their subject. Light was captured during this period due to the thoughts of godlike sun or the truth of the Holy Spirit. The Baroque naturalism maintained the religious themes. Baroque art exhibited the elements of awareness about how we perceived the natural human figures in motion through space, time, and light. The artists presented and analyzed human actions and passions in all its degrees of lightness, darkness, and intensity. It was during this period that Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Carravaggio, a fascinating Italian painter, introduced his dramatic view of the religious theme through a technique he developed called chiaroscuro (sometimes called tenebrism), where violent contrasts of light and dark, and darkness become dominating features of the image. Many artists used this technique in their paintings to some extent or another during the Baroque period.
