Yards of Freedom
A hundred by fifty yards of artificial turf and granulated rubber is where I feel serene. Whether it is sweating through practice or struggling for success against an opponent, my heart feels full. The football field is also known as the gridiron for one reason it is a test of physical ability and mental strength. A place where men go from peers to brothers; this is my place of tranquility.
There is a common, ominous goal shared by the whole team that we meet on day after day; and that is success. After a day of waking up early to get to work and then going from work straight to class for four hours, it is nice to get to the field to clear my head and focus on one thing with no other worries, to win at all costs, and to better yourself in any and every way. By sweat or blood we were expected to give their all day in and day out. This was induced by peer pressure and mentors guidance, a great thriving environment I believe. We are a selected few, statistics say less than one percent of amateur high school athletes go on to receive a collegiate athletic scholarship. It is a difficult going cross nation to school and starting life over all again, I am from southern New Mexico and the move was enormous to say the least. I went through extreme bouts of home sickness and depression, and I am extremely thankful...
