Are you ready to be a teacher? In this profession, one must have confidence in his/her abilities and have the desire to assist all students in having successful academic careers. As an educator, you must be able to adapt to the various issues you will come across in this field. Dealing with student diversity and understanding the impact of multicultural history in education are key issues that will affect a teacher’s ability to be effective in the classroom. Other major sociological areas that an educator must focus on are the various learning styles, the different philosophies related to education, students’ environments in school and at home, and curriculum standards and testing, as well as today’s classroom.
On a daily basis, students of all nationalities enter the school system. Some of these students speak little or no English. These students are more likely to enter school feeling isolated because they will have to begin learning in a manner in which they are most unfamiliar. Their learning ability will also be impacted by the fact that teacher’s expectations for them are very low. With these low expectations, teachers tend to teach these students differently, and the students then suffer academically according to the expectation theory, as stated in Sadker−Zittleman’s (2009): Teachers, Schools, and Society: A Brief Introduction to Education, (chapter 3, page 63).
